Can a vet come to my home for an urgent pet problem?

Many sudden concerns can be assessed in the home when a mobile visit is clinically suitable. A home examination can be particularly helpful when your pet is anxious in a clinic, painful to move, elderly, or more comfortable in familiar surroundings.

Tell XCura what has changed, when it started, how your pet is behaving now, and whether eating, drinking, breathing, walking and toileting have changed. This information helps Dr Noor prioritise the request and decide what can reasonably be assessed or treated at home. In some cases, the veterinarian may call you first to ask more questions and assess whether it would be in your pet’s best interests to be seen at home or whether hospital-grade intensive care is required.

Common urgent concerns owners contact XCura about

Examples include:

  • a minor wound, swelling or skin injury; if it is a clean and fresh wound (under 4 hours since wounding), please email an image of the wound to vet@xcuravet.com.au while you are booking the appointment so that we can assess whether suturing may be required. Suturing should be performed at a clinic under anaesthesia;
  • limping, stiffness or sudden reluctance to move;
  • vomiting or diarrhoea;
  • reduced appetite or an unexpected change in drinking;
  • ear pain, skin irritation, itching or a hot spot;
  • eye discomfort or discharge;
  • coughing or another new respiratory concern;
  • pain, restlessness or unusual behaviour;
  • urinary or toileting changes; a fully blocked cat or dog would highly probably need a clinic visit.
  • a flare-up of a known medical condition; and
  • another change that feels urgent to you, even when you are unsure how serious it is.
  • a broken or torn nail;

This list is not a diagnosis and does not guarantee that a home visit is suitable. It shows the range of owner concerns that may be discussed during triage.

A calmer way to assess a sudden problem

At-home veterinary care can reduce travel, waiting-room stress and the difficulty of moving a painful or frightened pet. It also lets Dr Noor see your pet’s normal environment, movement and daily setup. Family members can ask questions, discuss options and receive written or verbal next-step guidance without the pressure of a busy clinic visit.

Hours and service area

Home visits are generally available seven days a week between 8:00 am and 9:00 pm, including weekends and public holidays, subject to veterinarian availability. Same-day appointments may be available depending on urgency, location, route and the existing schedule.

XCura serves the Perth metropolitan area, including northern, eastern, western and riverside suburbs. Availability for a particular address depends on travel time, the day’s route, clinical priority and appointment capacity.

How to request an urgent or after-hours visit

1. Send the request

Use the online booking form and choose the most suitable appointment option. If the concern feels urgent, describe that clearly in the notes.

2. Provide the important details

Include your pet’s species, breed, age and approximate weight; the main concern; when it began; current medications and medical conditions; your suburb; and any photos or video that may help.

3. XCura reviews the request

Dr Noor or the XCura booking process reviews the information, prioritises the enquiry and confirms the appropriate next step. Additional questions may be needed before the visit is accepted.

4. Prepare for the home examination

Keep your pet somewhere quiet, safe and well lit. If practical, have current medication, recent veterinary records, photos, discharge summaries and test results ready. For cats, close doors and windows and keep the cat in an accessible room before arrival. For dogs, use a lead or secure area if handling may be difficult. Please take photos, videos or voice recordings of the problem to show the veterinarian during the visit. These will help us make a more accurate diagnosis.

When a veterinary hospital is the safer destination

Some patients need hospital facilities that cannot be brought into the home. Do not delay direct hospital transport if your pet is suddenly collapsed or unconscious, has severe difficulty breathing, has uncontrolled or major bleeding, is having repeated or prolonged seizures, has major trauma like a severe car accident, may have a snake bite, or appears to need immediate surgery, X-ray, oxygen, hospital intensive care unit stay or continuous monitoring.

If you are uncertain, you may still contact XCura and explain what you are seeing. The information you provide helps determine whether a home visit, a clinic or a hospital is the safest next step. A mobile-vet enquiry does not guarantee attendance and must not delay urgent hospital care when your pet is rapidly deteriorating.

Urgent mobile-vet questions

Can I request a visit if I am not sure whether the problem is an emergency?

Yes. Describe the concern and your pet’s current condition as clearly as possible. XCura can review the information, may contact you and advise the appropriate next step.

Is XCura a 24-hour emergency hospital?

No. XCura is a mobile veterinary service and does not provide hospital surgery, X-ray, intensive care continuous overnight monitoring. After-hours home visits may be available during XCura’s stated operating hours, subject to triage, route and veterinarian availability.

Can a broken nail be treated at home?

A broken or torn nail is a common reason owners seek an urgent assessment. Whether it can be managed completely at home depends on the level of injury, pain, bleeding, the pet’s behaviour and the findings on examination. We cannot provide a one-size-fits-all comment without assessing the patient.

What animal species do you visit?

XCura provides mobile veterinary care for dogs, cats, rabbits and rodents (hamsters, guinea pigs, pet mice and rats) when the requested service is clinically and operationally suitable.
